Take A Deep Breath
Pastor Ken Vance
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Breathing is so natural, so routine, so involuntary that we don’t usually pay that much attention to it, and yet, it is critical to sustaining life. It’s impossible to live without breathing. In fact, if someone experiences loss of breath, we look to administer CPR–cardiopulmonary resuscitation to save them. This life-saving procedure was developed to help someone recover their breathing and keep their heart beating to sustain their life. Just taking a deep breath alone can calm us, refocus us and give us a new perspective. Breathing is entirely linked to life.

Spiritually, the above verse is God’s definition of scripture. It’s God’s breath. It’s God’s life. It is essential for spiritual health and transformation. When we spend time in God’s Word, we are breathing in His life. It provides us wisdom, direction, the affirmation of our value, needed correction to keep us from harm, and even peace. Time reflecting on scripture is literally Holy Spirit CPR. It jump-starts our hearts and gives us fresh inspiration to keep going.

Success in so many areas of life is linked to our breathing. Whether sports, entertainment, or just managing stress. We need to learn to breathe right. Spiritually it is no different. It’s God’s Word that equips us for success. It trains us on how to live and achieve what God planned for our life. It matures us, strengthens us, and prepares us to meet any and every challenge. We need to learn to master our breathing.

To be spiritually healthy in 2021 and allow the transformation that makes us more and more like Jesus, let’s determine to stop, take control of our time, and make time in God’s Word a regular habit. It may require adjustments and even eliminating competing interests, but God’s Word alone spiritually is the key to life, health, and growth. It is well worth taking the time to slow down and take a deep breath!

Prayer: Father, thank you for Your Word. I believe it is Your life that you want to impart to me. Help me to reorder my affairs to make time with You and your Word a priority for me this year. I believe Your Word is You speaking directly to me, and I want to take time to breathe it in. I trust Your Spirit to guide me into all truth so that through the scriptures, I can grow spiritually this year and allow my life to be transformed. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
