When I was a child, my parents used to take me to an Apple Blossom Festival. The apple trees looked so big and tall with all their juicy fruit just dripping from their branches. And their leaves would shade us from the sun’s rays as we would walk the orchard. But the apple tree didn’t start out that way. First, it was a seed! When you plant an apple seed in the ground, it looks nothing like what it will become. A seed has no trunk or branches. It has no leaves or fruit. It cannot provide shade or rest. At least not now! But just wait. Over time it will become all these things. And it will grow luscious fruit to feed others! Why? Because it has within itself everything it needs to grow! What causes it to thrive? The right love, care, and attention. You must water it and fertilize it to help bring out all that is within.
Did you know the same thing is true of us? God has placed within each of us the spiritual DNA to become thriving people who will feed others from the fruit in our lives. But just like a tree, we need to be watered and fertilized by the leading of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to grow! We need to cultivate good in our lives by speaking what God’s Word says about us over our lives! Philemon 1:6 (KJV) “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.” As we understand, acknowledge, and speak what God has said about us over our lives, the Holy Spirit goes into action working to grow the luscious spiritual fruit of Christ-like character! And this is not only true of our lives but how we interact with others. We need to speak as Ephesians 4:29 says, “only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” In speaking what God says over our lives, we will be helping others to thrive!
Today, ask God to help you speak positive, encouraging, God-filled words to yourself and others. Ask God to show you the areas where you need the seed of His Word planted in your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to those individuals you can build up and encourage. Who is that person that you can pray and speak God’s Word over to bring out the best in them? Make it your aim always to put something into people, encourage them with what they can do. Every one of us starts as a seed, but all of us can thrive with the right care and attention!
PRAYER: Father God, in Jesus’ name, help me to speak Your Word to build myself and others up. Holy Spirit help me put a guard over my mouth to refrain from speaking unwholesome, negative words. Today I commit to working on planting seeds of good, positive, God-filled words into my life and others, Amen!
