My father is a carpenter by trade. Growing up he tried to teach me but I just could not get it. I had two left thumbs. However, one thing I did learn is that when you are going to build a house you must lay the foundation first. The builder digs a deep hole and fills it with concrete. The concrete must dry and not have any cracks because the house has to be built on something solid and strong. If you ever went to a builder and asked them to build you a house without a foundation, they would tell you no! A foundation is not an option, it is a must.
If you build a house without one, your house will fall! That is what the Lord Jesus is saying about His word. If we take Jesus’s teachings and apply them, we are building the house of our life on Jesus the rock. When the storms of life come, our house will still be standing when it is over. If we do not put His teachings to practice, it is like building a house with no foundation, and when the storms of life come, our house will come crashing down and be destroyed. Notice in Jesus’s analogy, both houses were hit with storms.
We need to remember just because we are followers of Jesus, it doesn’t mean we won’t be hit with any storms in life, we will. The difference between the two houses is that the one built on the rock was still standing when the storm was over. If we just hear Jesus’ teachings and don’t apply them, we are building on sand and our house will fall. Let’s build our lives on the rock of Jesus, let’s apply his Word and have a rock-solid life.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I thank you that as I apply the words of Jesus to my life, I am building my house on Jesus the rock. When the storms come, my house will not fall. Holy Spirit, help me to understand and apply the Word of God to my life, and as I do, make me rock-solid in my walk with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen
