Notice the first three words of this Scripture, “above all else.” There is an emphasis being made. It’s saying, “Hey, if you’re going to do anything, you better make sure you do this!” What is it that we need to do above all else? We need to guard our hearts. Why? The Scripture says, “For everything we do flows from it.”
It’s in our hearts, we hold our beliefs, and what we believe is how we live our lives. That is a very powerful truth. This is why it is so important to guard our hearts and make sure it is filled with the right beliefs. How are beliefs formed? They are formed by what is spoken to us through people, our culture, ourselves, and our family. What we hear, we begin to think on. What we think on long enough, we begin to believe. What we believe, we live. What we allow into our hearts, impacts us greatly! That is why we need to fill our hearts with the truth of God’s Word.
His Word (The Bible) is truth and light. Filling our hearts with His words, we begin to believe, and then we live them. We find ourselves growing closer to our Heavenly Father and He shapes our lives into the image of Jesus. God’s Word helps us to know what is true and what is false, what is good to allow in and what is not. The choice is always ours – guard your heart.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you for showing me the importance of guarding my heart. As I fill my heart with the truth of Scripture, may the light of your Word help me to discern between good and evil. Let your words set my life on a course of spiritual growth, culminating in the image of Jesus being formed in me. Thank you. In Jesus name, Amen
